In Sight Johor: Prehistoric Rock Formations at Tanjung Balau Beach, Kota Tinggi

The ancient, jutting rocks visible during low tide at Tanjung Balau in Kota Tinggi, are believed to be older than 275 million years ago. Viewed from the beach, it is rather misleading as you only get to see the tips of these jagged, wind-stressed rocks.

It’s only during low tide that the extent of their full form is revealed. During this time, the water is shallow enough to wade in and make your way from one rock island to another – an exploration not be possible during high tide.

This was my fourth visit to Balau beach and I am always filled with a sense of wonder to be in the presence of these stunning geological outcrops that have existed millions of years ago.

I hear that the sunrise here is stunning, but have yet to put up a night here to be up and early to catch the sunrise.

    1. Yes, that old. When you take a selfie on the rock, you are actually stepping on a piece of ancient history. Who would have thought you’d find it in Kota Tinggi? Don’t pray, pray…! 😁😁😁
